Police have reported the arrest of 244 Awami League activists from different areas of Dhaka during flash processions.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said 14 crude bombs and seven banners were recovered from those detained.
Earlier in the day, activists of the Awami League staged sudden processions in Gulistan, Farmgate, Karwan Bazar, Agargaon and Panthapath.
According to the DMP release, they were arrested based on information that they were attempting to disrupt law and order and spread panic among the public through flash processions.
The statement added, “Of these, 50 were detained by the Detective Branch, 27 by the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit, 100 by the Tejgaon, 55 by the Ramna, five by the Gulshan, four by the Mirpur and three by the Uttara divisions.”
During a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre on Wednesday afternoon, Additional Commissioner (Crime and Ops) SN Nazrul Islam said: “We are gathering information about those who are funding, sheltering and supplying people to take part in these flash processions.”
The arrest of nearly 250 activists within a day has sparked accusations within Awami League circles and its affiliate organisations.
An activist suggested, “Someone within the party leaked the details from our Telegram group to carry out simultaneous processions in Dhaka.”
A former Chhatra League leader said, “There was a plan to hold processions at 15 locations. Everyone knew about it from last night. The exact spots were leaked, which is why police were alert from the morning.”
He added, “Leaders and activists in hiding are causing such incidents while trying to take credit. That is why so many people were arrested today.”
Police had prior knowledge that Awami League activists were preparing for processions. As a result, forces had been deployed in areas such as Farmgate and Panthapath.
