Expressing deep concern and sympathy over the devastating fire at the Korail slum in the capital, Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has ordered an investigation into the cause of the fire and effective measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
The fire that lasted for more than five hours on Tuesday reduced many homes to ashes.
In a statement issued by the Chief Advisor’s Office on Tuesday night, Yunus wished the injured a speedy recovery and sent his condolences to the affected families.
The Fire Service received the first alarm at 5:22pm and eventually deployed 19 units to the scene in Dhaka’s Mohakhali area. The fire service confirmed at 10:35pm that the flames, which had spread across a large section of the settlement, were contained.
“We share the grief with those who have lost their houses to the Korail slum fire. The government will ensure all necessary support for rehabilitating the affected,” Yunus said in the statement.
He added that the relevant authorities have been instructed to immediately intensify rescue and relief operations.
