Lutfey Siddiqi, former managing director of CFA Institute, an international organisation of investment management professionals, has been appointed as the special envoy on international affairs to Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus.
The Cabinet Division issued a notification of his appointment on Wednesday evening.
According to the notification, Lutfey will receive a monthly salary, other allowances and facilities, equivalent to that of an advisor during his tenure as the special envoy for international affairs.
Although his appointment is said to be effective immediately, there is no mention of the duration of his tenure in the notification.
Siddiqi has previously worked as the managing director of regions and society relations at the CFA Institute. He is the first Bangladeshi to be appointed to a senior position in the organisation.
He was also a visiting professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science and an adjunct professor at the National University of Singapore.
He holds a first-class bachelor's degree in economics from the University of York, in the UK, and a master's degree in economics from the London School of Economics.
Earlier, a special assistant in the rank of a secretary, and another advisor were appointed to assist the chief advisor. But this is the first time the appointment of a special envoy has been notified by the Cabinet Division.
On Aug 28, Md Mahfuz Alam, the coordinator of the liaison committee for the Anti-discrimination Student Movement, was appointed as the special assistant to Yunus.
Prior to that, on Aug 24, Lt Gen Abdul Hafiz (retd) stepped in as a special assistant to the chief advisor. He was appointed to provide necessary assistance to Yunus in discharging his duties for defence and national integration development.
Hafiz will also get the salary, allowances and other facilities in the rank of an advisor.
