Police have filed a chargesheet against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 31 others over the killing of truck driver Sujan during the July Uprising.
Sub-Inspector Mizanur Rahman of the Prosecution Division confirmed that the chargesheet was submitted on Mar 11. A hearing on the matter is scheduled for Apr 8.
The list of suspects includes prominent Awami League figures such as former general secretary Obaidul Quader, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former law minister Anisul Huq, and former ministers Hasanul Haq Inu and Rashed Khan Menon.
Other notable names include Mohammad A Arafat, Jahangir Kabir Nanok, and several former local councillors.
The investigation, led by Inspector Shankar Kumar Ghosh of the Anti-Terrorism Unit, recommended exempting 47 named and nearly 500 unnamed individuals from the case as their full identities could not be verified.
According to the probe report, the "crackdown on students" was planned and ordered by Hasina, Kamal, and Quader, while local leaders including Tariquzzaman Rajib and Asif Ahmed Sarker executed the attacks.
Sujan, known by his first name, was fatally shot on the evening of Jul 20, 2024, at the Bosila crossroads while heading to park his truck at the Mohammadpur embankment.
He was declared dead at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital.
The victim’s brother Rafiqul Islam, who filed the case on Aug 22, expressed his hope for justice.
"My brother was killed. We can never get him back. Now that the chargesheet has been filed, I want a trial according to the law," he said.
Sujan leaves behind a 4-year-old son only known as Shuvo, who is currently being raised by Rafiqul.
Witness Md Nizam, a local tea stall owner, recalled the chaos of the day.
"We worked side-by-side. During the protest, we were together until the police and counter-protesters started chasing us. We ran in different directions, and that was when Sujan was shot."
