A Dhaka court has sentenced two men to life imprisonment for robbing and murdering a vegetable trader near Gendaria more than 15 years ago.
On Thursday, Judge Mahmudul Islam of the Ninth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court delivered the verdict.
The convicts, Babu alias Bagha Babu and Mamun, were also sentenced to five years' rigorous imprisonment for robbery.
Public prosecutor Aminul Islam Sarkar said each was also fined Tk 10,000, with an additional six months in prison in default of payment.
For the robbery conviction, each was fined another Tk 5,000, with three months' imprisonment in default.
As both convicts remain absconding, the court has issued arrest warrants and warrants to execute the sentences, the prosecutor said.
According to the case documents, the victim, Chunnu Mia, was a vegetable trader in Shyambazar. At around 12:30am on Feb 15, 2011, he went to the Jatrabari wholesale market to buy vegetables. After purchasing a sack of aubergines, he headed back to Shyambazar by rickshaw.
Around 5am, near Katherpul under Gendaria Police Station, the accused stopped the rickshaw and tried to rob him. Chunnu told them he recognised them, prompting Sajib to stab him.
Gendaria Police personnel took Chunnu to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The following day, Chunnu's brother-in-law Jahangir filed a murder case at station, alleging he had been killed after a robbery attempt.
After investigating the case, Sub-Inspector Moniruzzaman of Gendaria Police Station submitted a charge sheet on Jun 14, 2011, naming Sajib, Mamun and Bagha Babu.
On Aug 7, 2011, the court framed charges and opened the trial. During the proceedings, 10 of the 19 prosecution witnesses testified.
Suspect Sajib died while the trial was under way.
After hearing closing arguments from both sides, the court delivered the verdict on Thursday.
