Another car hijacking under the pretense of a "test drive" has been reported in the capital.
The incident allegedly took place on Saturday night. Car dealer Mashroor Nair subsequently filed a case at Shahbagh Police Station on Sunday.
Police have since teamed up with the Detective Branch to investigate the case, Shahbagh Police Station chief Mohammad Khalid Mansur said on Monday.
Efforts are underway to track the stolen car, valued at nearly Tk 7.5 million, using CCTV footage from various locations.
According to the case report, a man contacted Mashroor about buying a car. Later, he visited Mashroor's residence in Paribagh to inspect a Toyota Harrier in person.
During the meeting, the supposed buyer took the car keys and sat in the driver's seat, saying he would take it out for a test drive. As a precaution, one of Mashroor's relatives accompanied him and sat in the back.
Upon reaching the Paribagh intersection, two other people entered the vehicle, claiming to be the buyer’s friends. One of them then pulled out a gun and forced Mashroor's relative out of the car before speeding away.
A similar incident occurred in February, when a luxury car worth Tk 10 million was hijacked from Gulshan under the guise of a test drive. In that case, police later recovered the vehicle and arrested a suspect.
