The Mirpur Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch (DB) has arrested five people, including prime suspect Md Rubel alias Langra (Lame) Rubel and Bappa alias Shakil, in a case over the attempted murder of BNP activist Alamgir Hossain in the capital's Pallabi.
They were arrested in an operation that spanned Savar, Gazipur and Kushtia on Monday, said DB Mirpur Division Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rakib Khan.
The other three arrestees have been identified with single names as Hamidur alias Makhon, Parvez and Rabbi.
Rakib told bdnews24.com on Tuesday that a pistol, two rounds of bullets, two magazines of ammunition, a car used during the incident, and a Volkswagen car were recovered from the arrestees.
He also said that 1,000 Yaba pills were found in their possession.
DB Deputy Commissioner Rakib said, “All of them left Dhaka after the incident. We initially caught one suspect from some places in Gazipur. Then we picked up one from Aminbazar, and another from Savar. One was even picked up from Kushtia.”
DB investigation officials said that the accused left Dhaka immediately after the incident after fleeing from the scene of the crime on Friday. Later, the investigation found evidence that they were staying at various resorts and having “fun”.
On Friday, around 5:45pm, 45-year-old BNP activist Alamgir Hossain was shot at as he got out of a private car in Pallabi.
A pedestrian named Josna was also shot alongside Alamgir in the attack.
Alamgir is currently undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Josna has returned home after receiving treatment at Kurmitola General Hospital.
Alamgir's wife filed a case with Pallabi Police Station over the incident, accusing Rubel as the prime suspect.
