A Dhaka court has sentenced Al-Amin to life in prison for the murder of autorickshaw driver Emon Kazi near the capital’s Kadamtali over suspicion regarding an extramarital affair.
Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Moin Uddin Chowdhury delivered the verdict in the case on Monday.
State lawyer Zahirul Islam (Qayyum) said, "In addition to the life sentence, the accused has been fined Tk 20,000. In default of payment of the fine, he will have to serve another six months in prison.
"In addition, he has been sentenced to three years in prison and fined Tk 5,000 for destroying evidence related to the murder and hiding the body. In default of payment of the fine, he will be sentenced to another month in prison."
Before the verdict was announced, Al-Amin was produced in the court from jail. Afterwards, a sentence warrant was issued and he was sent to prison.
Court Bench Assistant Golam Nabi said that the verdict in the case was announced within 12 working days after Al-Amin’s indictment.
According to the case details, Emon disappeared on the evening of May 30, 2023 after he set off for work on his autorickshaw. The autorickshaw was recovered late at night from an area adjacent to Mamur Bazar in Gendaria’s Farashganj.
Emon's father Liton filed a general diary with Kadamtali Police Station the next day over the incident. Four days after the disappearance, on the night of Jun 3, the police recovered Emon's half-decomposed body from a pond near the West Mohammadbagh Sonamabia Mosque. The body’s hands and feet were tied. Emon's father then filed a case with Kadamtali Police Station over the death.
Detective Branch (DB) police took over the investigation of the case from the local police station.
On Jun 5, DB police arrested Al-Amin from Barishal. He later confessed to the crime in a statement to the court.
The investigation revealed that Al-Amin, who suspected Emon of an extramarital affair and had a dispute with him over a loan of Tk 5,000 called Emon to his rented house on the evening of May 30. There, in a pre-planned manner, he strangled Emon to death using a towel around the neck. The next afternoon, he bought a sack and rope from the market, wrapped the body in a sack, put it in a rickshaw and threw it into a pond.
After investigating the case, DB Police Wari Zone Inspector Rokonuzzaman Khan submitted a charge sheet against Al-Amin to the court on Feb 14, 2024. Charges were then framed against the accused and the trial began. The court heard the testimony of 10 people during the trial. After the prosecution and defence presented their arguments in the case, the verdict was delivered on Monday.
