Police have detained former Pabna member of parliament Khandaker Azizul Haque Arju in Dhaka.

He was arrested from the Lalmatia area on Monday night, said Jewel Rana, additional deputy commissioner of police, Mohammadpur Zone.

Jewel said, "He was arrested with the help of local Chhatra Dal leaders."

Arju was elected as an MP on the Awami League ticket from the Pabna-2 constituency in 2014.

Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner Ibne Mizan said the former MP was at a coffee house near Meena Bazar on Dhanmondi Road 27 for a meeting with party leaders and activists.

When local BNP and Chhatra Dal leaders and activists learnt of the meeting, they went there and an argument broke out, followed by a scuffle. While the other Awami League activists were able to leave the scene, the former MP could not flee due to health reasons.

The police then arrested him when the incident was reported.

"We are inquiring in his constituency to find whether there are any cases over the anti-discrimination movement or other cases against him," Mizan said.

Police said that Arju was “slightly injured in the scuffle” prior to the arrest.

Mohammadpur Police Station chief Abdul Halim said that the former MP suffered a heart attack, so he was sent to a doctor with support from family members under police guard.

Police official Halim also said that necessary legal action is being taken against him.
