A family quarrel has turned violent in Dhaka’s Darussalam, with a husband allegedly shooting his wife in the right arm, the Rapid Action Battalion has said.

Jasmin Begum, 38, was at home in Matborbari Mosque Lane when the shooting occurred on Saturday night.

The family initially said an unknown gunman had fired through an open window as she watched television.

Jasmin is being treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and is out of danger, the RAB said on Sunday.

The RAB arrested her husband Abdul Mannan alias Abdul Hannan, 45, their son identified only as Rakib, 25, and Rakib’s friend Hatim Mia, 21.

At a press conference on Sunday, RAB-4 Commander Lt Col Md Hafizur Rahman said: “The investigation found that the woman was shot by her husband. He became agitated during an argument with his wife and shot her.”

Mannan was arrested around 3:30am.

RAB said he later gave the pistol to Rakib, who hid it at Hatim’s home.

A joint RAB-police operation recovered the weapon and arrested Rakib and Hatim.

RAB also recovered one magazine, two rounds of ammunition and 215 yaba tablets from Mannan.

Hafizur said Mannan was a drug addict who returned home intoxicated, triggering the quarrel. Calling him a “notorious drug dealer”, he said three cases were pending against him.

Hafizur said Jasmin had no drug links and that Mannan’s drug use and dealing frequently caused quarrels at home.

The family had claimed outsiders fired through the window. Hafizur said Mannan fabricated that account and that “the incident actually happened inside the house”.

He said the pistol belonged to Mannan.
