Rain to drench all divisions, including Dhaka

The Met Office recorded 30 mm of rainfall between 6am Wednesday and 6am Thursday in Dhaka

Under the influence of an active monsoon, Dhaka has recorded 40mm of rainfall over the past 30 hours, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

The Met Office logged 30mm of rainfall between 6am on Wednesday and 6am on Thursday, followed by another 10mm between 6am and noon on Thursday.

The capital has been experiencing intermittent rainfall over the past several days.

The BMD has forecast varying degrees of rain across all divisions, including Dhaka, over the next few days.

“It’s the monsoon season, so there will be spells of rain with breaks in between,” meteorologist Md Abdul Hamid Mia told bdnews24.com on Thursday.

“There is no forecast of heavy or very heavy rainfall in Dhaka at the moment. We are likely to see this kind of weather for the next one or two days, with cloudy skies.”

Meanwhile, the BMD has issued a landslide warning, saying cumulative rainfall in Cox’s Bazar, Chattogram and Bandarban could reach between 150mm and 300mm by Thursday.

As a result, it warned of a moderate risk of landslides in Cox’s Bazar and Bandarban, and a comparatively lower risk in Chattogram.

The Met Office also advised several inland river ports to keep Local Cautionary Signal No. 1 hoisted due to the possibility of squally weather.

In a river port warning issued on Thursday, it said between 9am and 6pm, Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar and Sylhet could experience temporary gusty or squally winds of 45-60km/h from the south or southeast, accompanied by rain or thundershowers.

Accordingly, river ports in these areas have been asked to display Local Cautionary Signal No. 1.

In its regular morning bulletin, the BMD said the monsoon trough extends through Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and the southern part of Bangladesh to Assam, with one of its extensions reaching the northwestern Bay of Bengal.

The monsoon is active over southern Bangladesh, fairly active elsewhere across the country, and remains moderate over the northern Bay of Bengal.

Under its influence, during the 24 hours from 9am Thursday, most places in Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions, and many places in Rajshahi, Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions are likely to experience temporary gusty winds accompanied by light to moderate rain or thundershowers.

Moderately heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely at places in Barishal and Chattogram divisions.

Day temperatures across the country may fall slightly during this period, while night temperatures are expected to remain nearly unchanged.

In the 24 hours until 6am Thursday, the highest rainfall in the country was recorded in Cox’s Bazar at 76mm.

Other notable rainfall totals included 68mm in Sitakunda, 66mm in Khulna’s, 56mm in Bagerhat’s Mongla, and 55mm in Sandwip.

During the same period, the country’s highest maximum temperature was recorded in Sylhet at 35 degrees Celsius, while the lowest minimum temperature was 23.5 degrees Celsius in Narayanganj.
