A covered van has caused a multi-vehicle fatal crash in Jashore Sadar Upazila, claiming four lives and leaving one person injured.

It rammed into a battery-run three-wheeled passenger vehicle before crashing into another van on the Jashore-Khulna Highway around 11:30am on Saturday, said Masum Khan, chief of Kotwali Model Police Station.

Following the accident, an incensed crowd set the covered van on fire outside the Chaulia Filling Station at Rupdia under Narendrapur Union.

The dead were identified as Brishti Saha, 25, her son Shouvik Saha, 5, Aiyub Hossain, 43, and van driver Anwar Hossain, 60.

Brishti and Aiyub died at the scene. Locals rushed the injured to hospital, where emergency doctor Shakirul Islam pronounced van driver Anwar dead on arrival.

Shouvik died while undergoing treatment around 1pm. His uncle Mithun Saha said Brishti had been on her way home from picking her son up from school when the accident happened.

The injured, Sajjad Hossain, 28, is being treated at Jashore General Hospital.

After the crash, an angry crowd set the covered van on fire, bringing traffic on the highway to a standstill for an hour.

Firefighters arrived and brought the blaze under control, officer Masum said.
