Former Awami League MP Shah Alam detained from Iftar party released on bail

There is no complaint, general diary or case against him, police say

Shah Alam, the former Awami League lawmaker from Pirojpur-2, has been released from jail as there was no complaint or case against him.

He was freed from Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj on Tuesday, his lawyer Kayesh Ahmed Arnob said.

Ramna police detained him from an Iftar party at the Institute of Engineers premises in the capital on Feb 28 after a group of people angrily objected to his presence there.

On information, police soon nabbed him from the spot and produced him before a Dhaka court the next day, accusing him of working for the Awami League during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement in 2024.

In their petition submitted to the court, police said that locals detained him due to being named in several cases before handing him over to the law enforcers.

According to the plea, the Awami League leader could not answer “satisfactorily” during interrogation at Ramna Police Station.

Hence, he was arrested under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, it read.

Police sought to incarcerate him to “ensure fair investigation and justice,” it added.

Ramna police on Monday submitted a report, saying there was no complaint, general diary or case against Alam, his counsel said.

Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana passed his release order, Arnob added.

Alam represented the Pirojpur-2 constituency in parliament between 2008 and 2013.

He served as the district council administrator as well.
