Three days after his disappearance, police have recovered the body of a businessman buried in Dhaka’s Lalbagh.
The body was found after digging next to a five-storey building on Road No. 26 BC Das Street between 11:30pm on Thursday and 5:30am on Friday.
The victim has been identified as Sheikh Wasim Rony, 43. A friend of the deceased businessman, Md Masum, has been arrested over the incident.
Police say that due to a dispute over loaned money, Masum killed Rony.
He then allegedly buried his body next to a factory on the ground floor of his house and covered the area with cement.
Relatives said that real estate businessman Rony had been missing since the afternoon on Sept 8. His family filed a general diary over his disappearance at Lalbagh Police Station. Following an investigation, the police arrested Masum.
Rony’s body was found after Masum was questioned. It was later recovered after extended effort from near an imitation jewellery factory owned by Masum.
Nasir Uddin, the deceased's brother-in-law, said: "We had been trying to find Wasim Rony since he went missing. Masum's son lived on the lower floors of the five-story building on BC Das Street where he was killed. Masum's imitation jewellery factory was also located on the lower floors of the building. After killing Rony, Masum buried the body and tried to hide it on the factory grounds by pouring cement over it."
Murad Hossain, the deceased's wife's brother, said: "Wasim Rony's phone was switched off since the afternoon of Sept 8. When we went to Masum's house to look for him, his wife said that Wasim came to their house and then left.
“Rony and Masum were friends. Imitation jewellery businessman Masum borrowed Tk 300,000 with interest from Rony about eight months ago. They got into an argument when he did not repay the money.”
According to the detainee, the investigation officials say that Rony went to Masum’s factory on Sept 8 to pick up a cheque for the money owed. During an argument, the two got into a fight. At one point, Masum punched Rony in the head, knocking him unconscious. Then, out of fear, Masum killed his friend, buried the body and poured cement over it.
Talebur Rahman, deputy commissioner (DC) of the Lalbagh Division of Police, said: “The investigation launched based on the complaint of a businessman going missing. Based on the information received, the body was recovered after digging up the ground next to the accused’s business establishment. One person has been arrested. Whether anyone else was involved in the incident is under investigation.”
