DU expels Kabi Sufia Kamal Hall BCL chief Isha for ‘torturing’ quota reform protestor

Hundreds of students from different halls gathered in front of the Kabi Sufia Kamal Hall in the early hours of Wednesday morning to protest against.

The house tutors went to the scene after the students confined Isha to her room at midnight. Proctor Golam Rabbani also entered the hall around 12:45am.

He emerged from the hall around one and a half hours later and announced they were going to expel Isha.

He also arranged for medical treatment of a student who Isha had hurt late on Tuesday night.

“I was informed a student of the philosophy department, Iffat Jahan Isha, has seriously beaten another student and also saw a photo of the victim in social media,” Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Md Akhtaruzzaman told bdnews24.com.

“I do not have enough words to condemn the violence inflicted on one student by another. I told the hall authority that she has been expelled. We will complete all formalities tomorrow and also form an investigation committee to set an example for everyone,” he said.

The students said Isha called three students agitating for quota reform to her room and tortured them on Monday night, but the alleged victims did not reveal the incident.

The students became agitated when Isha called another protester and tortured her on Tuesday night, they said. They confined the BCL leader inside her room and shouted slogans demanding her expulsion.

Photos of the alleged victim’s bloodstained foot have already gone viral on the social media.

BCL has also decided to expel Isha, the organisation’s President Saifur Rahman Sohag and General Secretary SM Zakir Hossain said in a statement.

Sufia Kamal Hall students joined the protesters in the wee hours of Sunday, demanding action against law enforcers for injuring scores of demonstrators.

Chhatra League, the student affiliate of the ruling Awami League, also attacked the protesters during the clashes.

Many activists of the organisation, however, have thrown their support behind the protesters demands of an end to ‘discrimination’ in the quota system for government jobs.
