Dhaka, Oct 11 (bdnews24.com) — A Dhaka court on Thursday refused bail to former Army chief and Destiny 2000 Limited President Harun-Ar-Rashid, Managing Director Rafiqul Amin and a Director of the controversial MLM company in two money laundering cases and ordered them behind bars.
The three top officials earlier in the day surrendered in the court and sought bail, Anti-Corruption Commission lawyer Kabir Hossain told bdnews24.com.
Scrapping their bail pleas, the court of Senior Special Judge Zahurul Haque ordered law enforcers to put them behind bars.
When the ACC pleaded for remand of the trio, Judge Haque, without holding a hearing, asked the anti-graft body to move the court of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate with their plea.
"We have sought 10-day remand in each of the cases. Hearing will be held on our request later," ACC lawyer Ahmed Ali Salam told bdnews24.com
On Sep 27, the Senior Special Judge's Court of Dhaka rejected bails of 22 Destiny officials in the two cases and asked them to surrender in a court that had the jurisdiction to grant bail.
On July 31, the corruption watchdog filed the two cases under the Money Laundering Prevention Act with the Kalabagan Police Station against 22 top officials of the controversial firm charging them with laundering about Tk 35 billion by swindling investors.
Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammed Erfan Ullah had granted bail to all the accused in the two cases, but it raised questions as, according to the law, this court does not have the jurisdiction to hear a money laundering case.
Witnesses said up to 25 Destiny officials, present on the court premises, had a little scuffle with police when the MLM company's top brass was being taken to the prison van.
