Milestone tragedy: Another student succumbs to burns, raising death toll to 36

Eighth-grader Tasnia passes away after a month of treatment at the national burn institute

A schoolgirl injured in last month’s jet crash at Milestone School and College in Dhaka's Uttara has died after a month of treatment, raising the death toll to 36.

Tasnia, an eighth-grade student, succumbed to her injuries at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery at 7:55am on Saturday. She had suffered burns on 35 percent of her body.

Her father, Nazmul Islam, confirmed her death. “Tasnia passed away this morning. We are still at the burn institute,” he said.

Tasnia had been receiving treatment at the national burn institute since Jul 21, when a Bangladesh Air Force training aircraft crashed into a building on the school campus, in what has been described as the deadliest military aviation disaster in the country’s history.

Most of the victims were children, and a day of national mourning was observed after the tragedy.

In the wake of the incident, 56 people were admitted to the burn institute. Among them, 20 have died, 14 have been discharged and 22 remain in hospital care. At the Combined Military Hospital, 14 others died and one patient is still under treatment. Two more victims died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and United Hospital.

In total, 69 people were injured in the crash.
