Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Secretary General Anda Filip has said she will report to the organisation’s governing body on alleged enforced disappearances, killings and political persecution during the previous Awami League government.
At a meeting with several MPs at the parliament on Tuesday, Filip described the reported abuses as inhumane and drew parallels with repression under former Romanian communist ruler Nicolae Ceausescu, according to a Parliament Secretariat.
Reserved-seat MP Sanjida Islam Tulee recounted the alleged enforced disappearance of her brother BNP leader Sajedul Islam Sumon, while Dhaka-14 MP Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem Arman spoke about his alleged disappearance and detention at “Aynaghor”.
Chattogram-7 MP Humam Quader Chowdhury alleged he was held for seven months at a secret military intelligence facility and tortured.
Sylhet-2 MP Tahsina Rushdir Luna raised the disappearance of her husband, BNP leader M Ilias Ali.
Filip said she would submit the report after her visit, covering the alleged disappearances, killings and persecution.
A document titled “From Persecution to Revolution: Uncovering Systematic Human Rights Violations by the State” was also presented at the meeting.
