A trawler has sunk in the Buriganga River after being hit by a launch near Dhaka's Sadarghat, leaving two people missing.

The collision took place around 9:30am on Sunday in the river off Shyambazar, Fire Service and Civil Defence media officer Anwarul Islam said.

He said the trawler sank after colliding with MV Sundarban-12, a launch travelling from Barishal to Dhaka.

The trawler, newly built, was being taken from the capital to Cumilla at the time, he added.

According to Islam, the trawler was carrying 10 people in total. Eight have been rescued, while two remain missing.

The sunken trawler's location has since been identified, he said, adding that a Fire Service diver unit is working to recover the two missing people.
