Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch, or DB, has arrested Md Jahangir Alam, the former secretary of the health ministry's Health Services Division.
Jahangir was detained on Tuesday in Dhaka, according to DB chief Rezaul Karim Mallick. However, he did not disclose the specific case in which Jahangir was arrested, though he is implicated in several ongoing cases.
His arrest comes as part of a wider crackdown on former ministers, lawmakers and bureaucrats from the previous Awami League government, six months after the change in power.
Jahangir had served as the secretary of the Health Services Division from October 2023. He was in the role during last year's mass uprising in July and August that toppled the Sheikh Hasina government.
Following the July movement, he was transferred to the Planning Commission by the interim government. Later, on Oct 28, the Ministry of Public Administration sent Jahangir into compulsory retirement in the "public interest".
A member of the BCS 11th batch’s Administration Cadre, Jahangir joined the public service in 1993. He is a native of Rangpur's Pirgonj.
