Three people, including two schoolchildren, have been killed and two others injured after a truck rammed a three-wheeler in Pabna.
The accident occurred around 7:30am on Sunday in the Bangabaria area of the Pabna-Dhaka Highway.
The dead have been identified as Tasmia Akhtar, a student in fourth grade at Pabna Cadet Collegiate School and College, Abu Toha, a student in fifth grade at the same institution, and three-wheeler driver Akram Hossain.
A battery-operated van rickshaw was carrying students to the institution in the morning when a bamboo-laden truck rammed into it from behind at speed, causing it to overturn, according to Mostafizur Rahman, chief of Madhpur Highway Police Station.
Three people, including two students, were killed on the spot, he said.
Locals reported the incident to the police and Highway Police and local police personnel rushed to the scene and conducted rescue operations. Law enforcers have seized the truck, but the driver has fled.
The injured were rescued and admitted to Pabna General Hospital, OC Mostafizur said.
Following the accident, protesters blocked the Pabna Dhaka-Highway, said Pabna Sadar Police Station chief Abdus Salam. Police spoke to the protesters and brought the situation under control.
Traffic has returned to normal on the road, Salam said.
