The cabinet has approved a new visa policy aimed at making it easier for foreigners to enter and leave Bangladesh while attracting investment, business and skilled workers.

The new policy raises the number of visa categories to 34, up from 33 under the existing 2006 policy.

The approval came at the cabinet’s 16th meeting, presided over by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Secretariat on Monday.

The policy seeks to promote tourism and hospitality, facilitate technology and knowledge transfer, maintain national security and diplomatic balance, and establish a modern, service-oriented immigration system.

It will also replace previous visa-related circulars with an integrated framework for visa management at home and abroad.

The home ministry, Department of Immigration and Passports and Bangladesh missions overseas will jointly implement the policy.
