A man has died within 24 hours of suffering serious burn injuries after gas accumulated in a house in Dhaka’s Uttarkhan ignited.

Ali Hossain, 55, had suffered burns on 100 percent of his body and was undergoing treatment at the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute.

He died around 6:30am on Sunday, according to Dr Shawon Bin Rahman, an assistant professor at the institute.

The fire broke out at 6am on Saturday near Dubadia Koraitek, according to Habibur Rahman, chief of Uttarkhan Police Station.

Ali’s wife Hasna Hena, 45, and their daughter, identified only as Ankhi, 28, were also caught in the blaze and rushed to the burn institute.

Hasna has burns on 60 percent of her body, while Ankhi has burns on 15 percent.

Based on initial information, police official Habibur said: “Gas accumulated in the house due to a leak in the Titas Gas line. When home owner Ali Hossain’s wife Hasna Hena lit the fire to cook, it instantly sparked a fire that spread.”

“Apart from the victims, the furniture, mattress, blankets, pillows, and other things inside the house were also burnt.”
