Councillor Nazrul was my man: Shamim Osman

AKM Shamin Osman has advised authorities to check if ‘members of a law-enforcing agency’ are behind the murders of seven abductees including Ward Councillor Nazrul Islam in Narayanganj.

The Awami League MP claimed Narayanganj Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy and others were trying to ‘intentionally frame’ him for the abduction and killings.

“Councillor Nazrul did politics with me for long. My men are getting killed but Mayor Ivy is accusing me over their deaths,” he told bdnews24.com.

Nazrul met him the day before he was abducted along with four of his aides on Apr 27, Osman told reporters of a television channel.

Nazrul and his men were whisked away from the city’s court area where he went to secure bail in a case. Three days later, his dead body was found floating in Shitalakhya River.
The decomposing bodies of his driver and three aides along with that of senior Narayanganj lawyer Chandan Kumar Sarker and his driver, abducted on the same day, were also found in the river.
Shamim Osman said he helped Nazrul secure bail from the lower court and told him not to travel on his own.
He brought up Awami League leaders Nurul Amin Maksud, shot dead in 2010, and Zahirul Islam Parvez aka Kangaroo Parvez who went missing.
“Maksud, Parvez, Nazrul are all Shamim’s men. Why will Shamim kill his own men?” he said.
“Ivy comes after me every time a crime takes place in Narayanganj. They have been trying to frame me for long.”
Nur Hossain, Ward-4 Councillor and vice-president of Siddhirganj Awami League, is the prime accused in the case filed by Nazrul’s wife. He is currently a fugitive.
Police raided his home at Shimrail on Saturday and arrested 12 people and seized a black van.
On Sunday, police seized another private car from a glass factory in Shimrail which the factory’s general manager said belonged to Joj Miah, Nur Hossain’s brother.
The car was found after bdnews24.com spoke to Osman.
GM Glass factory is owned by Shamsuddin and Jalaluddin, uncles to Shamim Osman’s wife.
When asked about what the motives might be behind the murders, he said, “There might be more than one reason behind it. It could be personal rivalry, efforts to malign the government or me.”
“It’s important to see if some corrupt lower level officials of law-enforcing agencies are involved in the murders.”
“There is so much talk about RAB in international platforms. It’s possible that some of their corrupt officials did it in exchange for a lot of money. Through this they can profit and at the same time put the government in a tight spot.”
“Like police and journalists there are also bad RAB officials,” he said.
Osman said he has contacted the people at the highest level of government and RAB Additional Director General Col Ziaul Ahsan over Nazrul’s murder.
“RAB Col Ziaul told me how he was seeing the matter. He told me the killers will not be spared.”
He advised authorities in charge of the investigation to keep in mind activities by Jamaat-e-Islami and the bombing of Awami League’s office in Chasharha on June 16, 2001.
