A man has died after being beaten by a mob in Khulna city on suspicion that he was a child abductor.

Raju Sikder, a 26-year-old resident of Baliadanga village in Fultola Upazila, died while undergoing treatment at Khulna Medical College Hospital on Tuesday.

Police have detained two people suspected of involvement in the assault.

Humayun Kabir, assistant commissioner of Khulna Metropolitan Police’s Sonadanga Zone, said Raju was seen with a child near the Boro Mosque at Rayermahal Bazar around 5:30pm.

His presence with the child raised suspicions among some people in the area, who stopped and questioned him, according to the police officer.

At one point, several people began beating Raju on suspicion that he was a child abductor. More people later gathered at the scene and joined the assault, Humayun said.

Police responded to a call to the national emergency helpline 999 and found Raju critically injured.

He was taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where he died while receiving treatment around 6:30pm.

Police have yet to establish whether Raju knew the child who was with him, Humayun said.

Many people at the scene left following the incident, he added.

Police have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the killing and identify those involved.

Legal action will be taken against those responsible, Humayun said.
