Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader has called upon Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to take immediate action against “mob attacks” on suspects in courts.
In a statement issued Thursday afternoon, Quader described the culture of attacking accused individuals under police custody as “utterly contrary to the rule of law”.
The Jatiya Party chief’s remarks follow an incident involving retired three-star general Masud Uddin Chowdhury, who was arrested and ordered to police custody for interrogation on Tuesday.
Masud, a former lawmaker from Feni-3 and managing director of recruiting agency Five M International, was detained from his Baridhara DOHS residence.
He faces allegations of human trafficking and embezzlement of Tk 240 billion through a recruitment “syndicate”.
When he was produced in court on Tuesday, a mob threw eggs and dirty water at the former military officer before the court placed him on a five-day remand.
Quader emphasised that physical assault during police transit is intolerable.
"It is natural that if there are specific allegations against Masud Uddin, he will be legally arrested and interrogated on remand if necessary,” Quader said in the statement.
“If found guilty in trial, punitive measures will be taken. There is no room for disagreement on this," the statement read.
"However, attacking or harassing a suspect in police custody within court premises, or deaths in police custody, is neither normal nor acceptable in any civilised society," Quader added.
The Jatiya Party chairman noted that the trend of “mob attacks” has become increasingly visible in the country recently.
He condemned these incidents and sought the prime minister's intervention to restore discipline.
"I am drawing the kind attention of the relevant authorities of the newly formed government and the head of government, the honourable prime minister," Quader said.
