The High Court has granted bail to Bangladesh Sammilita Sanatani Jagaran Jote spokesman Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari in two cases over vandalism and obstructing police.
The bench of Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher passed the order on Sunday, making absolute a rule earlier issued on the bail question.
The same bench had previously cleared him for bail on Aug 3 in two other cases involving vandalism, attack and obstruction of government duty.
Lawyers said Chinmoy cannot be released yet because several other cases against him are still pending.
His lawyer Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya said Chinmoy faces six criminal cases in total and has now secured High Court bail in four.
His bail in the sedition case remains stayed, while the trial in lawyer Saiful Islam Alif’s murder case is under way at the Chattogram Speedy Trial Tribunal.
Chinmoy has been in jail since Nov 25, 2024.
Legal proceedings against him began with a sedition case filed over alleged disrespect to the national flag.
The case, naming 19 suspects, was filed at Chattogram's Kotwali Police Station on Oct 31, 2024, by Firoz Khan, the then general secretary of Mohra Ward BNP in Chandgaon.
Chinmoy was arrested in that case in Dhaka on Nov 25, 2024.
He was produced before a Chattogram court the next day, where his bail plea was rejected.
Amid clashes between his supporters and law enforcers near the court that day, lawyer Alif was beaten and hacked to death in the adjoining area.
Alif's father Jamal Uddin filed a murder case naming 31 people over the killing.
Following a request from the investigating officer, the court later showed Chinmoy arrested in that case as well.
