Government sends 17 police officers into compulsory retirement

The government says the retirements were ordered "in the public interest"

The government has ordered the compulsory retirement of 17 police officers, including three deputy inspectors general (DIGs), citing the "public interest".

The home ministry issued separate notifications on Thursday announcing the retirements.

The officers include three DIGs, 12 additional deputy inspectors general (additional DIGs), and two superintendents of police (SPs). Three of the additional DIGs are women.

The notifications state that the retirements were ordered under Section 45 of the Government Service Act, 2018, which empowers the government to retire a public servant after completing 25 years of service without assigning any reason if it considers the move to be in the public interest.
