A large fire at the Cargo Village at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal international Airport has disrupted flight operations, causing delays and diversions.
The airport authority says that eight flights have been diverted from the Dhaka airport to Chattogram’s Shah Amanat International Airport.
Among them is a US-Bangla Airlines flight from Bangkok to Dhaka, and two Air Arabia flights from Sharjah to Dhaka.
A Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from Syedpur to Dhaka was forced to land in Chattogram.
Similarly, a US-Bangla Airlines flight from Chattogram to Dhaka was forced to turn around and return to Chattogram after takeoff.
An IndiGo flight from Delhi to Dhaka was forced to land in Kolkata.
A Batik Air flight from Dhaka to Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur (OD-163) and a Dhaka to Mumbai IndiGo flight (6E-1116) are waiting in the flight taxiway.
A Cathay Pacific Airlines flight from Hong Kong to Dhaka is currently circling as it waits for landing clearance.
The fire started at the Cargo Village around 2:15pm on Saturday.
As of the latest report, 36 units of firefighters were working to tame the blaze alongside members of the Navy, and the BGB.
All flight operations at the Dhaka airport are temporarily suspended.
