State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam has said Bangladesh needs the Indian government's "political" and "diplomatic" goodwill to bring back former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who remains in New Delhi facing a death sentence for crimes against humanity during the July Uprising.
Responding to a question on Thursday, she said, "We hope the Indian government will respond to our repeated communications and letters regarding Sheikh Hasina and others who are in India, whose trials have been completed or are required in Bangladesh, and arrange for their return."
Hasina's extradition, she said, should not affect broader bilateral relations between Bangladesh and India.
"Relations will remain where they should be. Bilateral ties between two countries are multidimensional. Our relations, exchanges and dialogue with India will continue, as they already are," she said.
