The first Namaz-e-Janaza for Nayek Mizanur Rahman was held at Bangladesh Border Guards (BGB) 31 Battalion’s headquarters at Naikhangchharhi at 9am on Monday.
His body was kept at Banalata Rest House before being taken on a special Air Force helicopter to Debidar Upazila at 10:55am.
Nayek Rahman went missing after Myanmar’s Border Guard Police (BGP) opened fire on a BGB patrol near a Rohingya refugee camp on the border last Wednesday.
Tension between the neighbours rose over Rahman going missing, until the Myanmar Border Police admitted on Thursday they had his dead body.
After further tensions that led to a fresh encounter on Friday, a BGB team was finally permitted to cross into Myanmar territory and identify the body at 6pm on Saturday.
Mizanur’s body was decomposed and he was shot in the head, his autopsy at the BGB battalion headquarters on Sunday indicated.
A playfield near the trooper’s home at Debidar Upazila’s Bhelanagar village was cleared for the special Air Force helicopter carrying his body to land.
The BGB trooper is survived by his mother Rabeya Akhter, wife Shamima Akhter Parul and four daughters.
His father Lance Corporal Abdul Hafiz died fighting the Pakistani troops during Bangladesh’s Liberation War.
