Three furniture shop workers have been burnt in an explosion at a residential building in Kathalbagan in Dhaka’s Kalabagan Thana area.

All three victims work at a furniture shop in Panthapath and are residents of the same area.

Colleagues of the injured say the accident occurred when a septic tank on the ground floor of the building exploded.

The injured have been identified as Md Jewel, 20, and two men known only as Rana, 22, and Parvez, 21.

Rana has burns on 63 percent of his body, Jewel 30 percent and Parvez 21 percent.

The accident took place on the ground floor of a seven-storey building on Kanthalbagan Free School Street around 11:15am on Wednesday.

The injured were rescued and rushed to the Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and admitted to the hospital around 12:30am.

Md Rajib, a colleague who brought the injured to the hospital, said they were staying on the ground floor of the building after a night’s work when the septic tank suddenly exploded with a loud blast from the accumulated gas.

Three people there were seriously burnt, rescued with the help of locals and rushed to the hospital.

The doctor on duty at the DMC Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit said Rana is in critical condition and has been admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). The other two are under observation at the burn unit.

Md Faruk, officer-in-charge of the DMCH Police Camp, confirmed that three young men had been hospitalised with burn injuries and one was in the ICU.
