Three sentenced to death for gang-raping, killing child in Mymensingh

A fourth convict, a minor, has been given a 10-year jail term in a separate verdict

A court has sentenced three people to death over the rape and murder of a child in Mymensingh’s Dhobaura Upazila.

On Thursday, 25 days after the incident, Judge Sudipta Sarkar of the Child Violence Suppression Tribunal delivered the verdict, Public Prosecutor Bazlul Karim Chowdhury said.

The three convicts are Arif Mia, 19, Hasan Rakib, 20, and Abu Saim, 18.

The court also fined each of them Tk 200,000.

In a separate trial, Judge Mesbah Uddin Ahmed of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal sentenced a 16-year-old accused to 10 years in prison.

The verdicts were delivered in the presence of the minor.

According to case details, Nichhamoni was gang-raped and then thrown into a river and killed in Dhobaura on the afternoon of Jun 14.

The following day, her father filed a case at Dhobaura Police Station, naming unidentified persons as accused.

Police later arrested four suspects, who confessed before a court.

Investigators submitted the chargesheet against the four suspects on Jun 23, nine days after the incident.

The court delivered the verdict after recording testimony from 19 witnesses and hearing arguments from both sides.

The child's family welcomed the ruling and called for its swift implementation.
