Patwary is currently serving as the additional inspector general at the Special Branch.
He joined the force in 1986 as an assistant superintendent of police through Bangladesh Civil Service exams in 1984.
He played a significant role in gathering facts for the book ‘Karagarer Rojnamcha’ that focused on the days the nation’s founder Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman spent behind bars.
The book, published on Bangabandhu’s birth anniversary last year, documents incidents tied to different jail terms that he served between 1966 and 1968.
Patwary will head the force during the country’s next general election due in the last quarter of this year.
His term as IGP will remain valid until April 2020.
Born in Chandpur, Patwary graduated in social science from Dhaka University. He has served the Special Branch for the past nine years.
He took measures for the preservation of classified information stored in the record room of the Special Branch on Bangabandhu collected between 1948 and 1971.
Haque, the current inspector general of police, will retire on Jan 31.
