Police have paraded an alleged extortionist through the streets of Mohammadpur after arresting him for demanding illegal tolls from several local businessmen.
The suspect, identified with a single name Faruk alias “Kala Faruk”, was apprehended on Sunday afternoon during a raid in Keraniganj.
Following his arrest, police took him to various spots in Mohammadpur to reassure the community and send a stern warning to criminals.
Mohammadpur Police chief Mezbah Uddin used a hand-held megaphone to address the public directly.
"We have caught the extortionist. Do not pay anyone any extortion money. If anyone demands a toll, catch them and inform us," he announced to residents and shopkeepers.
The arrest followed a wave of criticism triggered on social media after CCTV footage of Faruk and his associates threatening businessmen in Bosila leaked.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Assistant Commissioner Abdullah Al Mamun said Faruk had been targeting several establishments, including those in Bosila Garden City.
"Faruk is a notorious extortionist. After a businessman filed a formal complaint, we launched a drive to track him down while he was in hiding in Keraniganj," he said.
By parading the suspect, the police aimed to restore public confidence and deter other gangs.
Police have called on the public to stay alert and report any extortion attempts.
