Bangladesh has gone four days without a dengue death, even as 249 patients were hospitalised with the disease in the past 24 hours.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said in its Friday bulletin that no deaths have been recorded since Aug 3, when three people died of dengue.

The mosquito-borne disease has claimed 59 lives so far this year, five of them in the first three days of August, according to DGHS data.

Of the new patients, 73 were admitted to hospitals under Dhaka North City Corporation, 27 under Dhaka South, and 39 to hospitals outside the two city corporations.

Among the divisions, Chattogram logged 67 admissions, Khulna 23, Mymensingh 17 and Rangpur three.

Another 249 patients were discharged over the same 24-hour period.

The health directorate says 18,129 people have been hospitalised with dengue since Jan 1 this year, of whom 16,789 have recovered and been discharged.

It has tracked dengue hospitalisations and deaths since 2000.

The disease peaked in 2023, with 321,179 hospitalisations, the highest on record, and 1,705 deaths, also the highest recorded in a single year.

Last year, dengue claimed over 400 lives, with around 102,000 confirmed cases.
