Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin reminded that the National Citizen Party could not be allocated the “Shapla” symbol because it was not included in the commission’s official list of approved symbols.

On Sunday, Nasir also said the commission has never given a symbol outside this list.

“The commission, however, can increase or reduce symbols if it chooses,” he added.

He said the symbols previously unavailable -- 115 in total -- are now included in the list. The commission has already made a policy decision not to allow Shapla, the water lily, as an electoral symbol.

The Nagorik Oikya also sought Shapla as its party symbol, in place of kettle, but the EC turned down the request.

On Thursday, NCP’s Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary and two party leaders met CEC Nasir for over two and a half hours.

Patwary said, “We asked for two hours why the symbol was being denied, but received no explanation. We told them that if our registration is granted, it must be with Shapla. NCP will not accept registration without Shapla, and the party cannot be registered otherwise.”

Patwary added that if any unwanted incidents occur during the February election, or if obstacles arise regarding symbols, the Election Commission may bear partial responsibility.

Responding to questions, Nasir said he had not heard NCP’s statements on confidence in the commission and was unsure in what context they were made.

He added, “Those leading the NCP were actively involved in the [July Uprising]. They participated at personal risk, showing patriotism. I believe they want democracy and the country’s welfare, and will consent to ensure a fair electoral process.”
