Two people have died and another has been injured after a speeding bus ploughed into a small passenger carrier, locally known as a “Leguna”, in Dhaka’s Jatrabari area while passengers were getting off.

The incident occurred around 9:30am on Sunday in the Ghuntighar area of Mirhajirbag, according to Mohammad Raju, chief (OC) of Jatrabari Police Station.

The victims were identified as Azizul Islam, 58, and Saiful Islam, 55, both residents of Gendaria. They were passengers on the Leguna at the time of the crash.

Azizul worked for a private company, while Saiful was employed at a motor parts shop.

Inspector Md Faruk, chief of the police outpost at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said the two were declared dead by doctors after being taken there around 10:30am. Another injured person is receiving treatment, he said, adding that details of the individual were not immediately available.

Police said the passenger carrier had stopped to allow people to disembark when a bus operated by Bahadur Shah Paribahan rammed it from the front.

The bus has been seized, the OC said.
