PM Tarique Rahman begins work to 'fulfil martyrs’ vision of a democratic Bangladesh'

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has set out to realise what he described as the martyrs’ dream of building a democratic and sovereign Bangladesh.

He wrote these words in the visitors' book at the National Memorial, paying tribute to the Liberation War heroes of 1971.

On Wednesday at 11am, the prime minister first offered respects individually, then with members of his cabinet.

In the book, Tarique wrote: “After fascist rule and oppression, the people, through a free and fair election, have chosen democracy by direct vote. Alhamdulillah. I give thanks to Allah.”

Paying homage to the martyrs, he wrote: “As the newly elected prime minister, alongside the new cabinet, I humbly honour the Liberation War heroes of 1971 whose sacrifice gave us an independent Bangladesh.

“I also pay my respects to all who have laid down their lives in the struggle to protect the nation and democracy, from 1971 to 2024.”

He added that he and his government believe the martyrs had aspired to build a “safe, humane, democratic and sovereign” country, and that work has already begun to realise that goal.

He prayed for the ability to implement every programme announced before the people and sought forgiveness for all martyrs.

Alongside signing the visitors’ book, the BNP chief planted a tree at the memorial.

Following the general election, members of the new cabinet were sworn in on Tuesday at the South Plaza of the parliament by President Mohammed Shahabuddin.

The government now comprises 50 members, including the prime minister, with 25 ministers and 24 state ministers.
