Alik Mree, the National Citizen Party’s central joint chief organiser for the northern region, has resigned in protest against the official silence of the NCP and the statement of the party's Senior Joint Chief Coordinator Abdul Hannan Masud over the alleged gang rape of a student from the hill communities in Khagrachhari.
Alik is the president of the Bangladesh Adivasi Chhatra Sangram Parishad.
"I have resigned from the party in protest against the party's silence over the gang rape of a hill community student in Khagrachhari and the lies of Hannan Masud," he said on Monday.
"The resignation letter has been sent to party leaders via email. In addition, I have sent a resignation letter to the responsible leaders of the office cell on WhatsApp."
In response to a question, Alik said: "Hannan Masud is lying about the gangrape incident of the hill community student. He has claimed that this incident is fake and fabricated. I strongly protest his statement."
Attempts were made to contact NCP Joint Member Secretary (Office) Saleh Uddin Sifat for comment on the matter, but he could not be reached.
Alik had earlier announced his resignation from the NCP in a post on his verified Facebook page at 11:30am.
At a rally in Noakhali on Sunday evening, NCP Senior Joint Chief Coordinator Hannan said: "India is playing its last trump card. An attempt is being made to destabilise the region by pitting the hill people and Bengalis against each other through a fake rape incident.”
“A deep conspiracy is unfolding in connection with the hill areas of Bangladesh. India wants to take this region. But we will be clear -- not an inch of Bangladesh's soil will go to anyone else. We faced Pakistan in 1971, we will face India in 2025."
