Police say two people have been killed after a lorry veered out of control in Dhaka’s Moghbazar and rammed into several other vehicles.
The accident occurred outside the Grand Shopping Complex in the Moghbazar Wireless Gate around midnight on Sunday.
Ramna Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Babul said from the scene, “We came and saw that several vehicles had been smashed. Locals had rescued at least four people in critical condition and rushed them to nearby hospitals. Our people are headed there.”
Babul said the container lorry had rammed into a CNG-run autorickshaw, two motorcycles, and a car.
Witness Nasir Hossain, a store worker, said the 14-wheeler veered out of control as it was descending from the Moghbazar Flyover.
“It crashed into two motorcycles, a CNG autorickshaw, and a car before it scraped against the sidewalk and came to a stop. The driver of the vehicle immediately got off and fled,” he said.
Another witness told the media that the damaged vehicles are still at the scene and blood can be seen on the road.
Two of the injured were declared dead by doctors after they were brought to the hospital, said Inspector Md Faruk of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital Police Outpost.
They were identified as Riyad Hossain, 22, and Zaman Ahmed, 42.
A motorcycle driver had been rammed and killed by a covered van in Dhaka’s Jahangir Gate area on Saturday night. The victim, Selim Sheikh, had worked for a ride-sharing service.
