A madrasa teacher accused of attempting to rape a student has died after allegedly consuming herbicide in Meherpur’s Gangni Upazila.
Sabbir Hossain, 25, from Debipur village, fell ill after reportedly taking poison while staying at his maternal grandfather’s home in Nawdapara, police said.
He was taken to local and then regional hospitals before being transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where he died on Monday night.
Police said Sabbir had recently been dismissed from a local madrasa following the allegation.
According to residents, he was accused of attempting to assault a student during private tuition at his home.
Efforts to settle the matter locally failed, and the allegation later became public.
Gangni Police chief Uttam Kumar Das said investigators believe Sabbir took his own life under mounting social and mental pressure linked to the accusation.
The body has been sent to Meherpur General Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Police said an investigation is ongoing.
