Three members of a family have drowned while bathing in a lake in Narayanganj’s Siddhirganj Upazila.

The incident occurred on Saturday in the South Kadamtoli area of the DND lake, said Siddhirganj Police Inspector (Investigation) Mizanur Rahman.

The dead were identified as Md Rasheduzzaman, 22, of Kashiani Upazila in Gopalganj, Md Galib, 18, of Raghunathpur in Kalia Upazila of Narail, and 12-year-old Suraiya, identified by a single name.

Police said Galib and Suraiya were the brother-in-law and sister-in-law of Rasheduzzaman. They lived with their family in a rented house in Kashempara of Siddhirganj.

According to police, the family went to the DND lake for bathing along with several members in the afternoon.

Although all of them knew how to swim, the three suddenly drowned.

After about an hour of rescue efforts, Fire Service and Civil Defence divers recovered the bodies of Rasheduzzaman and Galib first. Suraiya’s body was recovered shortly afterwards.

Inspector Mizanur said the lake is not suitable for bathing and similar drowning incidents had occurred there in the past.

Police said the bodies are being handed over to the families without postmortem examination as there was no complaint.
