Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman has travelled to the Maldives to attend celebrations marking the country's 61st Independence Day.
On the first day of his three-day visit on Saturday, Khalilur joined an evening tea reception hosted by Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu.
Earlier in the day, he was received at the airport by Maldivian Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam after arriving from the Philippines.
According to a statement issued by the Maldives Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Bangladeshi foreign minister is visiting the island nation from Jul 25 to 27 at the invitation of the Maldivian government.
The ministry said Khalilur will attend the official Independence Day celebrations on Jul 26 as a special guest.
During the visit, he is scheduled to pay a courtesy call on President Muizzu and hold talks with Foreign Minister Adam.
The discussions are expected to focus on further strengthening the longstanding partnership between Bangladesh and the Maldives, reviewing the broad spectrum of bilateral cooperation, and exploring opportunities to expand collaboration in areas of mutual interest.
The Maldives foreign ministry said the two foreign ministers will also exchange views on regional and international developments and reaffirm their commitment to continued cooperation in regional and multilateral forums.
The ministry described the visit as an opportunity to deepen ties between the two countries and further enhance bilateral cooperation.
It is Khalilur's first official visit to the Maldives since assuming office as Bangladesh's foreign minister following the formation of the new government in February 2026.
The Maldives Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the visit as a "significant milestone" in the longstanding and cordial relationship between the two countries and said it would help pave the way for closer cooperation in the years ahead.
