Five people, including a child, have been killed after being run over by a train in Kalihati Upazila of Tangail, police say.

The fatal accident occurred around 8pm on Friday near Bridge No. 7 near Dhalatengor under Dashokia Union, according to Sub-Inspector (SI) Mizanur Rahman of Tangail Railway Station Outpost.

All the victims have been identified by single names: Nargis, her 12-year-old son Nirob, Nargis’s eldest son’s mother-in-law Dola, Sultan, and Rifa.

Police, quoting locals, said a passenger bus of Diganta Paribahan heading to Sadullapur in Gaibandha stopped in Dhalatengor after running out of fuel.

The driver and his assistant then went to a nearby pump to collect fuel after asking passengers to get down.

At that time, several passengers got off and sat on the railway track beside the Dhaka-Tangail-Jamuna Bridge Highway.

SI Mizanur said the Sirajganj Express train came at speed and ran them over, leaving a child, two women, and two men dead on the spot.

Soon after the incident, law enforcers reached the scene, began rescue operations, and are trying to identify the bodies.

On information, police from Jamuna Bridge East station and Railway Police went to the spot, recovered the bodies, and started formalities.
