A college student, who was also a popular social media content creator, has been hacked and shot dead by a group of unidentified assailants at the Central Shaheed Minar.
The victim, 25-year-old Rakib Ahmed, was a second-year BA student at Shaikh Burhanuddin College.
He was the son of Torikul Islam Khokon, a staff member at Dhaka University’s Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall.
The incident occurred around 9:15pm, according to Shahbagh Police Station.
Police citing witnesses said Rakib was hanging out with friends at the monument when the attack took place.
"A group of three to four youths approached them and began hacking Rakib indiscriminately with sharp weapons before shooting him in the head," said Sub-Inspector (SI) Mithu Fakir.
Rakib’s friend, Al Amin, who was present during the attack, confirmed that the assailants targeted Rakib specifically while the group was chatting at the Shaheed Minar.
Rakib was well-known in his circle for creating video content for TikTok and other social media platforms. Although his family is originally from the Choumuhoni area of Bhola Sadar, they currently reside in the Nimtoli area on Nazimuddin Road due to his father’s employment at the university.
