Jamaat-e-Islami MP Gazi Nazrul Islam is facing an attempted murder case filed by his private driver, who alleges he was assaulted over suspicions of leaking a private video involving the lawmaker.
The case was filed with Pallabi Police on Tuesday against Nazrul and four others.
The complainant Obaidur Rahman alleges that the suspect assaulted him and attempted to strangle him after he protested what he described as the MP's “illicit relationship” with his niece and was suspected of leaking private footage.
The four other suspects are Masum Billah, Motassim Billah, Aminur Rahman and Rakibul Hasan.
Police arrested Aminur shortly after the case was filed.
He was produced before a Dhaka court on Wednesday, where the investigating officer Sub-Inspector Rakibul Huda of the Detective Branch's Pallabi Zonal Team, sought his detention.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin ordered Aminur to be sent to jail and directed investigators to submit their report by Aug 24, according to prosecution police SI Saiful Islam.
According to the case statement, Obaidur lived with his sister at Rose Garden Tower in Pallabi’s Kalshi, while working as the MP's personal driver.
He alleged that, because of family ties, Nazrul frequently visited the flat and eventually developed what the complaint describes as an "illicit relationship" with Obaidur's niece.
