The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested two shooters allegedly involved in the murder of Jubo Dal leader Golam Kibria in Dhaka’s Pallabi.

According to RAB, the two suspects had been on the run since the incident and recently came to Dhaka to prepare documents to leave the country.

Acting on a tip-off, RAB arrested Md Rashed alias Lopan, 35, described as a shooter who took part in the “Kibria killing mission,” from the Rupnagar Eastern Housing area around midnight on Thursday. Md Jahangir Hossain alias Kallu, 40, was arrested from Diabari in Uttara.

Based on information provided by Lopen, a foreign-made revolver and three rounds of bullets used in the murder were recovered.

On the evening of Nov 17 last year, three individuals wearing masks and helmets entered a hardware shop in Block C near the old Pallabi Police Station and shot Kibria at close range before fleeing.

He was taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital around 8pm, where doctors declared him dead.

Kibria’s wife, Sabiha Akter Dina, filed a case with Pallabi Police Station, naming five individuals and accusing seven or eight unidentified people.

During the attackers’ escape, locals caught a man named Jony Bhuiyan, 25, and handed him over to police.

The day after the incident, RAB-4 arrested two named suspects in the case—Md Monir Hossain alias Sohel alias Pata Sohel, 30, and another “key suspect,” Md Sujan alias Bukpora Sujan, 35, who faces 18 cases.

At a press briefing on Nov 19, RAB said the killing was planned and stemmed from a political rivalry and a power struggle. Initial interrogation of the arrestees also indicated that a large sum of money had been exchanged in connection with the murder.

Four months after the killing, RAB-4 has now arrested the two shooters who allegedly took part in the “killing mission.”

Additional Superintendent of Police Md Shahabuddin Kabir of RAB-4 said they launched an investigation immediately after the incident to bring those involved to justice, but the shooters remained absconding.

“At one stage of the ongoing investigation, we learned that shooters Lopan and Kallu had come to Dhaka to arrange documents to leave the country. Acting on this information, they were arrested,” he said.

Based on preliminary interrogation, RAB maintains that the murder was carried out over political rivalry.

The two suspects identified themselves after watching CCTV footage from the time of the incident and admitted their involvement in the killing, he added.

RAB also said the two are “professional shooters” and have multiple cases against them at different police stations, including on charges of murder, extortion and drug-related offences.
