Seven people, including two children, have been killed in landslides in Bandarban’s Lama and Cox’s Bazar’s Chakaria amid persistent heavy rain.
The incidents occurred on Wednesday night and Thursday morning in the two neighbouring Upazilas.
Jewel, 28, and his wife Kulsuma Begum, 22, were killed in a landslide in Lama, while Yunus, 28, his wife Ranu Begum, 22, and their four-year-old son Solaiman, were killed in another. They are all residents of Missionpara in Aziznagar Union’s Ward No. 2.
Union council Panel Chairman Mobarak Hossain said, “The first incident happened at night, while the other happened around dawn. The Fire Service was not brought from Lama as it is quite far away.
“Instead, the Fire Service was brought from the Chunti area of Chattogram District’s Lohagora, and worked to find the bodies. The bodies have been recovered. The funeral prayers will be held in the afternoon after initial Surathal reports are prepared.”
Mobarak said around 10am that Lama had seen horrific landslides in 2009 and 2016, which resulted in many deaths.
“But there has never been [a landslide] in the Missionpara area. The weather isn’t good today either. It is still drizzling.”
Two landslides around the same time have left residents of the Aziznagar area tense, he said.
Lama Police chief Kaysar Hamid told bdnews24.com that five people from two families had died in separate landslides in the Aziznagar Union.
"The first incident occurred between 2am and 2:30am. Two people from a family were killed. Later, at 4am, another landslide buried three people from the same family."
Stating that their bodies had been recovered, Kaysar said: "There is no Teletalk network anywhere in Lama Upazila as the power has been out since last night. Due to this, there are problems with communication."
Meanwhile, two children have been killed in in a landslide in Chakaria.
Chakaria administrator (UNO) Shahin Delwar told bdnews24.com that the two children were killed in a landslide in the Moshniya Kata area of Baraitoli Union’s Ward No. 7.
