A couple and their two children have been hospitalised with burn injuries after an air-conditioner exploded in their home in Dhaka’s Jatrabari.

The incident took place around midnight on Friday at a residence in Dholaipar, according to police.

The victims have been admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery. They were identified as Tuhin Hossain, 38, a private service employee, his wife Eva Akter, 30, and their sons Tanvir, 9, and Tawhid, 7.

Dr Shawon Bin Rahman, resident surgeon at the institute, said Tuhin suffered burns on 47 percent of his body, Eva 15 percent, Tanvir 40 percent and Tawhid 8 percent.

Jatrabari Police Station chief Kamruzzaman said the explosion may have resulted due to a lack of maintenance.

“It is suspected that the indoor unit of the AC exploded because it had not been cleaned for a long time."

However, Khaleda Yasmin from the Fire Service Control Room said they were not officially notified of the blast.

“Perhaps the victims were rescued locally and taken to hospital,” she said.
